The legendary Lisa Loud gears up for SeOne’s free Just The One party

Reported by benz / Submitted 27-07-05 00:22

It’s not often we get to talk to artists on this site who really have been involved in dance music since it first took off in this country. DJs who have been helping to shape the sound of club land for the best part of three decades. Lisa Loud is one such dance music legend, and one who can be proud to stake her claim as one of the first successful, high-profile female DJs who showed the boys that she could play with as much skill and passion as they could. For this she must be congratulated.

Lisa has never been far from the forefront of dance music since acid house and ecstacy took over our country like a very welcome rash in the late 80s. She has worked closely with some of the biggest names in dance music, played all over the world (and we really mean that!), spun for some of the most glamorous soirees around, seen dozens of dance music trends come and go, and still managed to keep herself in the spotlight after all these years. Her general theme is house music, but she has always successfully adapted to the times and managed to keep people interested in what she is playing. She must be doing something right!

July 30th will see Lisa headline a very special free party at SeOne in London Bridge, which goes by the name of Just The One. Yup you heard me right — SeOne, Lisa Loud, FREE PARTY. You'd be mad to miss it. Or can you not afford the tube fair? I had the privelege of talking to Lisa and getting the inside story about her rise to fame and the innermost workings of the dance music industry...

Where and when did you first start DJing regularly? Was the status of a DJ regarded as different to what it is now?

I first started DJing in 1987 — “The summer of love”! I was the protégé of Paul Oakenfold who promoted nights in London after being influenced by the scene in Ibiza. We started nights at the Sanctuary, the small backroom of Heaven called Future on Thursdays and took over the whole venue on Mondays with the infamous Spectrum. The acid house scene mushroomed and soon spread all over the country, where promoters such as Charlie Chester, James Bailee and Dave Beer promoted legendary nights such as Flying, Venus and Back 2 Basics respectively, where I became a resident.

Over the years the years the DJ scene and the dance music industry has became a global phenomenon! I would say the difference with the status of DJs these days, would be what comes with any profession. Experience, knowledge, and contacts pay!

To be recognised these days will not come without hard work, learning about the media, the loopholes and having a style and technique. These are all things that need to be recognised and taken seriously in the music business today as the competition is so rife. Years ago we were just playing music generally to loads of mates and having loads of fun, it was more of a thrill putting on a free party than charging people. It was such a movement that it became a worldwide success, and with that comes demands that are unavoidable. For example, producing and making mix albums helps your profile.

What kind of music have you played over the years? With what style do you think you achieved the most popularity and success?

If I had to be genre specific, I have always played house music, and despite the many dips and climbs I have seen in the club scene house music is always there!

What have been your biggest achievements over the years? Anything your parents are particularly proud of?!

I am really proud of many achievements in my life. I have been a businesswomen for almost 20 years, having accomplished a successful, longstanding DJ career that has run parallel with a music business career. I worked for Richard Branson’s Virgin Records from the age of 17 and promoted Soul II Soul, Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry amongst others. At 21, I set my own company up — Loud and Clear Promotions — and promoted bands such as Leftfield, Underworld, Xpress-2 and Primal Scream to name a few. Having been a part of such a groundbreaking time in music has been a massive achievement.

As for mum and dad being proud, it took them a while to get their heads around my career path, but after being awarded platinum discs recognising my contribution for sales on my artists and TV and magazine interviews eventually coming out, they accepted that I did have a proper job!

What kind of gear do you play these days? Do you feel that there has been a central theme linking the kind of music you play over the years or have you just changed your style depending on what kind of music is about?

I’ve always played house music, but have loved all aspects of music. I’ve had to reinvent myself, otherwise I wouldn’t have survived the recessions that the music business faces every so often. I’ve always said there are two types of music, good and bad and I’d like to think I’ve always played good quality music.

Which people would you say have helped you along your way the most over the years? Did you ever have a mentor as such?

I have to give Paul Oakenfold credit, despite that fact that we are worlds apart musically these days. He was so influential to so many of us and he held out a olive branch to me that was attractive, I grabbed it with both hands and have had a great 20 years so far.

What are some of the most glamorous gigs you have played?

I have DJed at The Baftas, The Brits, MTV European Music Awards, London Fashion Week and was the resident DJ and presenter for the Ian Wright show on ITV. One of the biggest celeb parties I played has to be the Duran Duran Brits Outstanding Achievement Award Party. Everyone was there from Cat Deeley to Justin Timberlake... it was funny seeing all those people dancing.

There are too many to mention, but Moscow is without doubt one of the coolest cities right now. The crowd are musically astute, so up for it, and absolutely stunning. I have DJed under the stars in Dubai and Thailand at amazing beach parties, oh Shanghai is awesome, China’s NYC! And I just returned from Marakech, where I played Pacha, which is absolutely out of this world... built within a castle-type exterior, two restaurants, a swimming pool, a main dance floor with a sound system that blows your mind and a chill out area that is just stunning!

And what about the most downright, filthy, naughty illicit ones?!

Down right naughty, SeOne definitely qualifies for that! To be honest these days I spin internationally so often the most filthy part about me as a DJ is my music.

What can you tell us about this Just The One hoo-hah at SeOne on July 30th? I believe you are headlining?

I love SeOne, it has to qualify as one of the best underground clubs in London at the mo. I DJed at the birthday party for Just The One and had a brilliant time. The team at SeOne are all there for the music, the sound system is amazing and the club is absolutely dedicated to pure clubbing. The free party on the 30th is a great gift to all the loyal punters and a great opportunity for SeOne to educate the press. I am really looking forward to it. Let’s face it.. who does free parties these days? Right back to the old skool, can’t wait.

What are your favourite clubs in London? Which hold special memories for you?

Favourite clubs in London at the moment are SeOne, Heaven, Fabric and Egg. Heaven and the Milk Bar really hold the best memories for me, as that is where my career started.

Aside from the UK, where else do you get bookings? Are there any other countries where you are particularly well known?

I play all over the world, literally. I would say I am best known in Asia and Russia right now, which are fantastic places to party.

Which producers and DJs are rocking your world at the moment?

I am playing loads of different material right now from all over the world, but Gary Gecko from Samui in Thailand, Tom Neville, Mark Knight and Nic Fancuilli probably feature most heavily in my box, they’re all really consistent.

And more importantly, what food is rocking your world at the moment? The readers of Harderfaster.net must know Lisa Loud’s summer favourites!

Japanese has to be my fave food, but I love food — dinning out is one of my favourite pastimes.

Speaking of summer, are you going to be attending any of the plethora of astounding looking festivals over the world in the next few months?

I won’t be playing the festies, but may attend for a laugh if I have the time. I will be touring Africa, India and various other places throughout the summer, so have a pretty full schedule.

And finally Lisa, are you really that loud? Or is this false advertising?

Come and see for yourselves!
